When you've left something further away, like at the beach or gym, the Find network - consisting of hundreds of millions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices worldwide - helps locate your AirTag. And it's built to protect your privacy every step of the way.
How does it work?
Your AirTag emits a secure Bluetooth signal detected by nearby devices in the Find network. These devices inform iCloud of your AirTag's location, and then you can open the Find app and see it on the map. The entire process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy. And it's efficient, so you don't need to worry about battery life or using mobile data.
Lost Mode makes finding things even easier
Just like your other Apple devices, AirTag can be put in Lost Mode. When detected by another device in the network, you'll automatically receive a notification. You can also set it up so others can get your contact information by holding your AirTag near an NFC-compatible smartphone, the same technology that allows you to pay for things with your phone.
Built-in Privacy Protection
Only you can see where your AirTag is. Your location data and history are never stored on the AirTag itself. Devices that relay your AirTag's location also remain anonymous, and location data is encrypted every step of the way. So not even Apple knows where your AirTag is or which device helped locate it.
AirTag is designed to avoid unwanted tracking. If someone else's AirTag ends up among your belongings, your iPhone will detect it and alert you. If you still haven't found it after a while, AirTag will play a sound so you can hear it's there. But if your friend has an AirTag or you're on the train with a bunch of people with AirTags, you don't need to worry. Warnings are only sent when an AirTag is separated from its owner.
